The 8 most breathtaking volcanoes that can be visited in the four corners of the planet: an overview of the best volcano in the world.

1. The Eyjafjallajokull, Iceland

Why go there: it offers you fire and ice. Climb to the top of the glacier for a view of half the country and the sea. You can go back downhill. It is an intense day trip out of Reykjavik.

When to go: If possible, plan to visit this volcano between April and September.

Difficulty: 4.5 out of 5. After all, you’re on a glacier!

Namely: The climb can take up to 8 hours and you will need to dress properly to keep warm and dry. Hiking boots are essential.

2. The Pinatubo, Philippines

Why go there: The Pinatubo went into operation in 1991, the worst eruption since the Krakatoa in 1883. It is estimated that global temperatures have fallen by 0.5 ° Celsius when the ash cloud reached the stratosphere. Everything is calm at the moment, but the reward for your ascent is a beautiful blue-green crater lake (which did not exist 20 years ago) and a pleasant temperature. Visit the hot springs as well as the Capas National Shrine, a memorial to the victims of the Second World War.

When to go: it is in January that the temperature is good and the waters have most beautiful colors.

Difficulties: 2 out of 5. You will do a part of the excursion in a 4 × 4 and you will climb a slope of moderate inclination for a few hours.

Namely: take a swimsuit, but the water may be cold. It is always a good idea to have strong hiking shoes because of the rocky terrain. There are fees for access to the trail and a toll for the 4 × 4 ride, which is however often included in a travel package.

3. The Pacaya, Guatemala
Why go there: it’s a 3-in-1 hike. We climb an active volcano, we see a second volcano nearby and a third which has become a crater lake. Located just above Antigua, UNESCO World Heritage City, the Pacaya ascent, which lasts half a day, is an unmissable activity. It is forbidden to go to the top, but at the point of return, some travelers have been able to roast marshmallows on the magma!

When to go: from November to January. It is the morning when the visibility is the best. Keep in mind that constant volcanic activity can cause hiking on the Pacaya to be canceled.

Difficulty: 3 on 5. Exhausting hike, strong winds.

To know:  wear shoes with thick soles. Pretty thick to have time to react if you walk on something hot enough to melt them. If you choose to go there to see the sun go down, make sure you have a flashlight for the return. If you are still cold, be sure to dress warmly and expect cold winds. Enjoy guided tours as they are escorted by tourist policemen. There was a lot of theft before that precaution was taken.

4. The Agung, Indonesia
Why go there: the Agung has a magical nature and it is not only a poetic formula. The locals believe that it is a spiritual place. The hike begins in a very important Balinese temple: Besakih. Then, it is a difficult climb where one can frequently observe monkeys. The reward is a sunrise over Bali from the top of the world.

When to go: from April to October, during the dry season.

Difficulties: 5 on 5. The dark + a steep slope + monkeys = a real challenge.

Namely: You can go hiking without a guide, but the trails are difficult to follow. Bring with you a headlamp and warm clothes. Expect a very difficult ground for the ankles. Have enough water with you and beware of gourmet monkeys!

5. Cotopaxi, Ecuador
Why go there: it is the second highest peak in Ecuador and we see it as far as Quito. Covered with snow and majestic, this is an ideal place for the photo album. Despite a violent past in the 18th and 19th centuries, Cotopaxi is nowadays a plume of steam, because it melts some of its glacial cover. If this climb is not adventurous enough for you, sign an agreement with a company that will allow you to get off the hut down the mountain by mountain bike.

When to go: December to April, when the temperature is more mild.

Difficulty: 5 on 5.

Namely: equip yourself for an alpine expedition. There will be ice. It is best to use the services of a guide.
